This figure as been authentified by French art expert Alain Dufour in 2021, Paris.
The Montols live north of the Bénoué river and south of the Jos plateau, in very rough terrain. Their statues were kept in small round stone houses with thatched roofs (dodo) formerly decorated with trophy skulls, reserved for worship, away from the eyes of women and children.
They were used to do justice after deliberation. They also participate in divination rituals organized to find the cause of a disease and for its healing.
A similar exemple is exhibited at the British museum it is recorded as “a household god called Etadi Yuyu with a provenance from North Nigeria, Montol, from a village near Shendam”.
